Althorp - Childhood Home of Diana

Every summer, Althorp opens its doors to the public and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into 19 generations of the famous Spencer family. On this special breakaway we head to Northamptonshire to discover this 16th-century stately gem, the childhood home of Diana, the former Princess of Wales. It’s easy to see why she was at her happiest here, with an abundance of rooms to get lost in, Italian marble flooring to practice her tap dancing and plenty of fun to be had in the grounds outside, where cottages, stable blocks and roaming deer pepper the picturesque woodland. Althorp is also where Diana met King Charles III, and where she was buried in 1997 upon the wishes of her family. Her final resting place is now lined with 36 oak trees, one to represent each year of her life, and is a lovely spot to reflect on the incredible life of the People’s Princess.

Day 1

From a morning pick up in your local area we travel by coach to the pretty town of Market Bosworth for some free time. Later we check in to our hotel, arriving in time to enjoy dinner and our first night’s stay.

Day 2

Today we visit Althorp, a spectacular Grade I-listed stately home set in 550 acres of attractive parkland and the childhood home of Diana, former Princess of Wales, as well as her final resting place. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, it has been home to the Spencer family for over 500 years and houses one of Europe's finest private collections of furniture, ceramics and paintings, including portraits of King Charles I and Anthony van Dyck’s War and Peace. Featuring 31 bedrooms, a ball room and a ‘Painter’s Passage’, every nook has a fascinating story to tell, bringing to life 500 years of family history. Sir Winston Churchill began writing his memoirs in one of the state bedchambers and the 1st Earl of Spencer secretly married his fiancé in another, while Diana’s favourite was the King William bedroom. In addition to exploring the beautiful interiors, we have time to wander round the magnificent park, remodelled gardens, arboretum and peaceful Round Oval lake. Later, the coach takes us back to our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, we check out and make our way to the beautiful town of Stratford-upon-Avon, forever associated with William Shakespeare. Fans of the famous bard can visit the house in which he was born, and there’s a chance to wander the riverside gardens or discover the town’s theatres including the Swan Theatre, home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In the afternoon we re-join the coach for our journey home.
