Beaulieu & the New Forest
After breakfast, we set off on a picturesque drive through the New Forest and take in the beautiful sights of Lyndhurst and Lymington, while we journey to the Beaulieu Estate, set in the heart of the national park. The Palace House, once the gatehouse of the medieval Beaulieu Abbey and the ancestral home of the Montagu family since 1538, was extended in the 1800s and is now a fine example of a Victorian Gothic-style country house. Adorned with family treasures, portraits and memorabilia, including Lord Montagu’s library, the Palace House is a wonder to explore, being one of the first historic houses to open to the public in 1952, thanks to the innovative character of Edward, Lord Montagu. Our visit includes entrance to the spectacular gardens, which feature Wilderness and Victorian Flower gardens, and the National Motor Museum, home to a world-famous collection of over 280 motoring memorabilia.
Included Excursion
Isle of Wight (Osbourne House & Scenic drive to The Needles)
We cross over to the Isle of Wight by ferry and enjoy a scenic drive to admire the multi-coloured cliffs and famous chalky outcrop, The Needles, before being treated to a lovely leisurely visit to Osborne House. Purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 as a seaside retreat away from London and Windsor, the Italianate palace reflects their tastes and passions and boasts spectacular views across the Solent. It is no wonder that Victoria herself once said, ‘it is impossible to imagine a prettier spot.’ We take an intimate glimpse of royal family life as we wander through the magnificent Royal Apartments, and the walled gardens and grounds, where we find the charming Swiss Cottage, used by the royal children to learn household management.
Included Excursion
Swanage Steam Railway & Corfe Castle
We journey on the heritage Swanage Steam Railway, where we can sit back and take in Dorset’s stunning scenery on the way to Corfe Castle. We discover the magnificent ruins of this imposing 12th-century stronghold built during the reign of William the Conqueror. The castle has witnessed centuries of major historical events, such as the struggle for power during the English Civil War in the 17th century, when it was besieged by parliament, resulting in a vicious battle, and this storied past is shown through the scarred remains of the fortress. Relax and enjoy refreshments in the 18th-century tea room and garden, with spectacular views.
