Cornish Weekend – Turkey & Tinsel

Cornish Weekend – Turkey & Tinsel

4 days
from £269££pp

2025 Oct Nov

The year is 1944 and, in the skies, high above the Netherlands, British paratroopers of the First Allied Airborne Army get ready to drop. The ill-fated Operation Market Garden had begun, one of the largest Allied operations of the Second World War. The mission? To seize key bridges and hold them until the ground forces could reach them. The result was the largest airborne drop in history – made famous by Cornelius Ryan’s book and Richard Attenborough’s classic film, A Bridge Too Far – and despite initial successes, the operation is often remembered for its failure to capture the crucial bridge at Arnhem, leading to the operation's ultimate objective not being achieved and 17,000 Allied lives lost.

The operation consisted of a massive airborne assault (Market) to seize key bridges and a ground offensive (Garden). We trace the footsteps of the fallen soldiers and journey into the heart of Operation Market Garden, visiting drop zones and key locations of deployment. Joined by a knowledgeable Battlefield Guide, we visit key towns such as Arnhem and Oosterbeek, as well as landing zone memorials, museums and much more.

Day 1
Arrival

After joining the coach, we make our way to our hotel and check in. Later we enjoy a mulled wine reception together.

Day 2
Optional excursion to Falmouth (£11pp)

On our optional half-day excursion, we have the chance to visit Falmouth, a charming port town and popular sailing destination with a proud seafaring history and fine beaches. It is home to the deepest harbour in Western Europe and other attractions include Pendennis Castle and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Tonight, we enjoy a 4-course dinner served with a complimentary glass of wine back at the hotel.

Day 3
Padstow

We head to the quaint fishing port of Padstow on our half-day excursion. The town is renowned as a great foodie destination thanks in part to its connection to Chef Rick Stein, whose restaurant is based locally. Lovely views can be appreciated from the harbour which is surrounded by craft and gift shops, cafés and restaurants. Back at the hotel this afternoon, we enjoy tea and Christmas cake.

Day 4
Return Home

We make our journey home.

Hotel Rating

Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, or are very-welcoming family-owned properties. Generally, they offer a greater range of facilities and services, and bedrooms tend to be a little more spacious with additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or waiter service.
