Affectionately known as La Calendale, Christmastime in Provence is always a lovely experience. It's a time when centuries-old customs weave through the air; little figurines called Santons adorn homes, churches and public spaces to depict the nativity and village life, 13 desserts are typically served on Christmas Eve and locals warm up with vin chaud throughout the region. We enjoy this festive atmosphere in Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, with guided tours illuminating the highlights of these historic cities, and enjoy plenty of fun and relaxation at our hotel in pretty Toulon.

Itinerary

Ferry to Calais and overnight stay in France on a bed and breakfast basis.

After breakfast we continue our journey, stopping on the way in Avignon. Previously voted as the European City of Culture in 2000, this striking, historic city was once the seat of the Catholic Popes in the Middle Ages – be sure to visit the unique Palais des Papes in Avignon’s ancient quarter, one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. There are also beautifully-preserved ramparts, old alleyways, mansion-lined streets, lively squares and the famous Pont d'Avignon to explore.

This evening we check into the ibis Styles Toulon Centre, our base for the next five nights.

Choose to spend Christmas Eve how you please, from exploring the local area to relaxing at the hotel. In the evening, we enjoy a special Provence-style gala dinner.

Christmas Day is a lovely day of leisure and celebration at our hotel, where we are treated to a traditional festive lunch.

Our first stop of the day is the oldest city in France, Marseille, where its rich history spans the centuries. From the bustling Vieux Port, where fishermen sell their catch along the boat-lined quay, to the historic Le Panier neighbourhood with its narrow, winding streets and colourful markets, Marseille is a breathtaking city, full of culture and tradition. Highlights include the stunning views from Notre-Dame de la Garde, also known as La Bonne Mère. This grand basilica sits atop La Garde Hill, the highest point in the city, and is a truly iconic symbol of Marseille. We discover more with our local guide.

Afterwards, we spend a relaxing Boxing Day afternoon back at the hotel, with films, games and quizzes.

We enjoy a guided walking tour of Aix-en-Provence, known as the City of a Thousand Fountains. Nestled in the heart of Provence, this historic city is famed for its thermal hot springs and picturesque Old Town. There's plenty of sights to see before stopping for lunch (not included) and time at leisure. Stroll through the bustling markets, admire the elegant fountains and immerse yourself in the quintessential Provençal way of life in the charming cafés.

After checking out of the hotel, we make our way to Lyon, the perfect lunch stop thanks to its reputation as the gourmet capital of France! Situated where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet, this impressive city takes us on a journey through time. Its Old Town – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – offers a maze of narrow streets, vaulted passageways and historic buildings. Another highlight is the Notre Dame de Fourvière, a late 19th-century basilica built in shimmering white stone. We continue to our overnight hotel in Dijon, where we enjoy a light evening meal.

Continue on to Calais for our return ferry home.
