Day 1: From a morning pickup in your local area we travel by coach to our hotel for our relaxing overnight stay.
Day 2: Today we head to Belvoir Castle for our exclusive visit. We begin with a welcome from The Duchess of Rutland, Emma Manners, (who disguised herself as a cleaner so she could watch filming of The Crown!), before exploring the estate for ourselves.
This has been the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland since the first Lord of Belvoir came to England with William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Since then, the family have lived in an unbroken line here, standing the test of vast remodellings, familial squabbles, wars and even a damaging fire in 1816 which destroyed priceless works of art by the likes of Rubens and Van Dyck. Castle guides are on hand to provide an insight into Belvoir’s extensive history and point out rooms and locations which appeared in The Crown, as well as other blockbuster films and series.
There’s also time to discover the stunning grounds, which features the rose-studded formal gardens, Japanese Woodland, the Regency-style Duchess Garden plus the remarkable Capability Brown gardens, brought to fruition after his late 18th-century plans were discovered in the castle archives in January 2013.
Our day is capped off with either a copy of The Accidental Duchess: From Farmer’s Daughter to Belvoir Castle or a bottle of wine, produced by Belvoir’s very own vineyard. In the afternoon we rejoin the coach for the journey home.
