Top Landmarks to see in Italy

28 June 2023

Where can you find glorious food, sun-drenched streets, sparkling lakes, colourful towns and some of the most famous sights in the world? Italy of course! From an eternal symbol of the Roman Empire to one of the country’s most well-preserved castles, there are so many landmarks to tick off in this beautiful destination…

Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence

Get ready to be totally awestruck by Florence’s cathedral, the enduring image of the Tuscany region which has dominated the skyline since its completion in 1368. While the terracotta-hued dome looks iconic from afar, seeing the intricate green and white marble façade up close is a must, or you can even climb to the top of the dome and the bell tower for different perspectives of this mesmerising masterpiece.

Top tip: For stunning panoramic views over Florence, head to Piazzale Michelangelo to spy the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and other icons of the city.

Colosseum, Rome

A trip to Rome’s spectacular Colosseum is like stepping into the ancient past. Constructed between 70 and 80 AD and offering a treasure chest of stories, it’s no wonder that this is Italy’s most visited monument! As you stroll around, just imagine what this amphitheatre has seen, from emperors cheering on gladiator contests to dramatic battle re-enactments.

Top tip: Before you go, download the Colosseum tour from the Rick Steves Audio Europe app on your smartphone – now you have a free audio guide!

Leaning Tower, Pisa

No trip to Pisa is complete without a photo of you pretending to hold up the world-famous Leaning Tower! The design of this landmark was flawed from the beginning, and while the wonkiness is a result of a weak foundation, we can’t imagine it any other way. There are plenty other breathtaking buildings to discover in the Piazza del Duomo too, including the largest Baptistery in Italy.

Top tip: If you want to live like a local during your time in Pisa, stay away from your afternoon cappuccino or latte! As milky coffees are frowned upon after 11am in Italy, how about an espresso instead?

The Scaligero Castle of Sirmione, Lake Garda

With crenelated turrets rising from turquoise waters and a fairytale drawbridge, the Scaligero Castle of Sirmione is one of Lake Garda’s most unforgettable vistas. Dating back to the 14th century, it was used as a defensive stronghold for the Verona territory and its ruling Della Scala family. Follow in their footsteps here and survey the land from the castle’s viewpoint before exploring the rest of delightful Sirmione!

Top tip: The shops in Sirmione and other Lake Garda towns offer the best souvenirs, from lemon-scented delights and unique pottery to deliciously authentic biscuits and more.

St Mark's Square, Venice

We simply couldn’t pick one must-see in picturesque Venice! The bustling Piazza San Marco is the hub of Venetian landmarks and was once referred to as the drawing room of Europe by Napoleon. Highlights include the lavish St Mark's Basilica, the instantly recognisable Campanile San Marco and the elegant Doge's Palace plus the oldest coffee house in Italy, Caffè Florian.

Top tip: If you’d like to explore narrow canals and beautiful bridges away from the busy crowds, head to the quieter Cannareggio district of Venice.
