The history of the Edinburgh Tattoo

08 May 2024

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a world-renowned event held each August at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. This fascinating event features a spectacular display of music, dance, and military pageantry, and has been captivating audiences for over seven decades.

Where did the Tattoo get its name?

The term "tattoo" has Dutch origins dating back to the 17th century. The Dutch phrase 'doe den tap toe', meaning 'turn off the taps'.  The call would be made to drummers or trumpeters, who would then signal to the innkeepers it was time to close. This would signal to the soldiers to return to their barracks for the night.

The first Edinburgh Tattoo.

The origins of the Edinburgh Tattoo can be traced back to 1949 when the first event took place as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The first Tattoo saw just eight military bands performing in the grounds of Edinburgh Castle. Since then, it has grown to become an iconic and popular cultural event, attracting thousands of visitors from across the globe each year.

Highlights of the Edinburgh Tattoo.

One of the key highlights of the Edinburgh Tattoo, and what makes it so unique, is the stunning illuminated backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, which provides a majestic setting for the performances, light shows, and firework displays.

The Edinburgh Tattoo features a diverse range of acts, including military bands, dancers, singers, as well as performers from around the world. Each year, the event brings together a unique blend of traditional and contemporary acts, creating a truly unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages.

You’ll want to look out for one of the most iconic performances during the Tattoo, the Massed Pipes and Drums. Watch in awe as hundreds of pipers and drummers come together in unison to create sight and sound that will leave a lasting impression on all those in the audience.

The event also pays homage to the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces, both past and present, and serves as a reminder of the importance of honouring and remembering those who have served their country.
