Must-See Christmas Light Displays in 2022
20 September 2022
You know the countdown to Christmas is underway when you take your first sip of fruity mulled wine and spy the sparkle of twinkling lights above those Christmas-card-ready streets.
More magical than Santa tucking into a mince pie, our Christmas Market breaks are guaranteed to get even the biggest Scrooges into the festive spirit, but what are some of the must-see Christmas light displays in 2022? Read on to find out!
Exeter Christmas Lights
With a patchwork of market stalls stacked high with everything from festive decorations, delicious yuletide treats, stocking fillers and handmade crafts, Exeter is extra special during the lead up to Christmas. Dazzling layers of lights are blanketed high above the city’s web of cobbled streets, from Castle street to the Guildhall, and the cathedral itself is illuminated in a lovely warm glow to create a truly enchanting atmosphere.
Blackpool Illuminations
We couldn’t do a round up of England’s top Christmas light displays without mentioning the iconic Blackpool Illuminations now, could we? It’s one of the biggest in the entire world! Making up a key part of the seaside resort’s winter festivities since the Victorian era, the six-mile-long stretch of vibrant installations must be seen to be believed. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen helped design a special Art Deco feature this year and was even in charge of the grand ‘switch on’ in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. (Personally we like to think that he actually pulled the switch while sprawled out on a gaudy zebra-print chaise longue, but that’s just us!)
Edinburgh Christmas Lights
Spire-crested streets bejeweled with twinkling lights, knots of ancient lanes draped in stunning decorations, swirling ferris wheels gazing down upon vintage funfairs…Edinburgh was made for Christmas! East Princes Street Gardens is always worth a look for their world-renowned Christmas Market offering local produce, and as for mulled Irn-Bru, well, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!
Bath’s Illumination Trail
Could there be a more magical sight than Bath all wrapped up for the festive season? Its jumble of Georgian terraces, circuses and crescents combine to create a stunning cityscape awash with its annual illuminations. Including glittering projections, illuminated trees and icicle lights at every turn, the icing on the (Christmas) cake has got to be the floodlit Bath Abbey! Ready to sink your teeth into a slice of Bath? Join us for an unforgettable two-day break to see Bath Christmas Market & Oxford
Amsterdam Festival of Light
Cocoons of come-hither streets and curvy Baroque buildings rub shoulders with photogenic bridges and a network of pretty canals - that’s Amsterdam, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any more spellbinding, along comes the spectacular Festival of Light! Playing a giant game of dot-to-dot along the waterways, we think this artistic light installation is best experienced from the canal itself, which is why we’ve laid on an included cruise as part of our four-day festive break. You do not want to miss this!
