28 February 2023

Situated between Ireland and England and ruled by several different cultures over the centuries, the Isle of Man is one of the most unique places in all of the British Isles. With so much personality packed into such a small island, there are a whole host of spectacular sights to experience. Here are just a few!

Great Laxey Wheel

Built into the hillside overlooking the town of Laxey, the spectacular Laxey Wheel is the world’s largest working water wheel and one of the must-see spots on the island. Known locally as the ‘Lady Isabella’, after the wife of the presiding governor at the time of the wheel’s opening, the wheel is such a beloved icon of the island that it is featured on the Isle of Man’s £20 note!

Douglas Bay Horse Tramway

A testament to Victorian engineering, the Douglas Horse Trams are an iconic part of the Isle of Man and have been in existence since 1876, carrying plenty of royal visitors such as Queen Elizabeth II,, The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. The trams were first introduced as a way to capitalise on the booming tourist trade in Victorian times and still carry tourists and locals along the sun-drenched promenades today.

Manx Electric Railway

A trip to the Isle of Man wouldn’t be complete without a journey on the award-winning Manx Electric Railway. Built between 1893 and 1899 and connecting the island’s capital, Douglas, with Laxey in the East and Ramsey in the North, this 17-mile railway covers the beautiful Manx countryside and gives you the opportunity to take in its picturesque villages, stunning glens and rugged coastline.

Snaefell Mountain Railway

The only electric mountain railway in the British Isles, the Snaefell Mountain Railway has been in operation since 1895 and takes passengers over 2,000ft up to the summit of Snaefell, the highest point of the Isle of Man! Experience unrivalled views of Laxey Valley and the Great Laxey Wheel as the electric-powered train winds its way up into the Manx hills. Once you’ve reached the summit, catch a glimpse of the ‘Seven Kingdoms’, made up of the Isle of Man, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Kingdoms of Heaven and the Sea.
